ROGER CHANDLER
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

Roger Chandler, a local artist with national acclaim, has worked many years as a free-lance illustrator, graphic designer and fine artist. As a pioneer in computer illustration, Roger earned recognition from his peers with over 20 Addy awards, HOW’s On-line Design Award, Print Magazine Annuals, and the New York Art Director Club Award. He has been commissioned by national and international clients including Hewlett-Packard, Keebler, Sea World,Pizza Hut, Capri Sun and many others.

In as many years, Roger never sold out to “the computer can do it for you” art. He always remained faithful to the trade, sketching each piece art by hand, then scanning it into the computer to retrace and color digitally. In a bold move, this naturally gifted artist is trading his computer for a canvas and his mouse for a paintbrush to bring his popular whimsical style to the world of fine art.

In this series of paintings, appropriately titled “tropical daydreams”, Roger takes the viewer surfing with dolphins, sailing the high seas, exploring the ocean’s floor, or just relaxing in the shade of a palm tree. As an artist, surfer and San Diego local, Roger says his work is inspired by “a combination of real life experiences and tall tales from the deep”. Since beginning his career as a technical illustrator for NASA in the late 1970’s, Roger’s work has evolved into brightly colored, loosely styled, uplifting art--a far cry from the space shuttle stowage document. Roger
free-lances full-time from his studio in La Mesa where he lives with his wife and three children. In his free time, Roger enjoys coaching little league, surfing and playing recreational baseball.
