Christopher Lawrence Forderer was born
May 24th, 1968 in Toledo, Ohio. He studied art at the University of
Toledo between 1987 - 1994. Living in a cramped studio at the Collingwood
Art Center a half mile from the new art school designed by Frank Ghery
that flanked the renowned Toledo Museum of Art. Chris was able to
interact with a variety of art forms and artists that encapsulated
music, poetry, visual and theatrical arts. It was at this stage that
for better or worse Chris realized that he was going to pursue a career
as an artist. He moved to California in the wake of his older siblings,
struggling to find footing on the west coast. Chris was lucky enough
to meet some people who shared the same creative, and inventive energy
that he missed from the art center.
Over the last few years Chris has
developed a new style and technique that is uniquely his creation.
His new art form is facilitated by a motorized kinetic sculpture called
an I-BOT. The I-Bot is made up of left over parts from previous projects.
It is made up of a tripod of pens or paint brushes that carry a small
battery operated motor attached to a dolls head. As the head rotates
the base or pens due to counter balancing begin to vibrate and spin
as a unit. Left alone the I-BOT makes a series of dots or points in
an orbital fashion. The direction in which the bot moves is dependent
on the weight distribution of the I-BOT or pitch of printing surface.
Contact with other I-BOT's or the border of a piece also can direct
or redirect the path of marks being made.
A more interactive approach can be
taken by masking off delegated portions to create an overall image.
Tonal variety is achieved by exposing determined areas more or less
to the I-Bots. Softer mid-tones are possible when the pens begin to
dry up, the make gray dots.
