Four Questions We Ask Every Featured Artist:

1. Where you born an artist or did you develop into one?

I think I'm still developing as an artist. In general, I feel that whatever we become in life is generally learned, although clearly certain kinds of aptitudes are passed down genetically, which is particularly obvious in families that have a history of producing great achievers in certain fields.

2. Excluding yourself name one of your favorite San Diego Artists?

For me a favorite San Diego artist would be Francoise Gilot.

3. Why do you choose to create in San Diego and where do you San Diego moving as an "Art City"?

I came to San Diego in my early twenties, and although I already planned to have a future as a painter, I don't think I felt that where I lived would have a crucial effect on being able to pursue a future as an artist. I came here because I thought it would be a very nice place to live, and because I had relatives here. I feel fortunate to have lived here most of the time since then.

4. As an artist, what burning question do you need answered?

A question for a major collector: Do you feel that a forged work of art has no significance at all, or that it should be judged by whatever merit it might have in its own right?

ARTIST STATEMENT: "The Flower Ladies", as I call them, are a series of whimsical watercolor and gouache paintings, which have grown from a long standing interest in fashion illustration, children's book illustration, and of course flowers. I do not regard them as paintings of fairies, fairy art or fantasy art, but would prefer to think of them as fantasies based on fashion design. They are the product of numerous other influences as well, including many of the things surrounding me in everyday life, and extending to a passion for many areas of the decorative arts, such as the fanciful Chinoiserie designs of the 18th century Frenchman, Jean Pillement." 	ABOUT THE ARTIST: Harrison Howard was born in 1954 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and grew up not far from there. Much of his professional career has been devoted to mural work in private houses, and has included screens, panels, easel paintings, and watercolors. Primarily, his work has focused on decorative themes including architectural subjects, chinoiseries, and scenic's, often with bird, animal or floral motifs. He has worked extensively with alkyd paints, oil paints, and to a lesser extent, acrylics.

His father, Wing Howard, was also an artist, and is known to many in San Diego, where Harrison now lives, through the murals he painted in the Whaling Bar of the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. Harrison started his career at the age of 19 with a one-man exhibit at the upstairs gallery owned by Ross Thiele & Sons Interiors, then located on Prospect Street in La Jolla. All but one of the 24 available watercolors were sold. Since that time Harrison has worked primarily as a freelance artist. Today, Harrison has returned to a focus on smaller paintings, and is now producing limited edition giclee prints of many of these paintings as well.

Harrison's work also appeared in Architectural Digest, May 1991 in a feature on leading California Mural Artists.
