BIO: As an infant, artist Joshua Krause (b.1977, NYC) found great pleasure in picking up the tiny pieces of trash that littered his New York City block. Cigarette-butts, gum and broken bottles, the ephemera of his neighborhood streets would later become elements of Joshua's nervous collages. "I love working with the tiny fragments of peoples' lives, the things people leave behind." Each one of Joshua's works seems to be a smart and tender manifestation of varied personalities, a veritable mishmash of traits and visuals that create a single picture in their distinctive combination. Joshua draws from a fascination of popular culture, evolution, and myth and then adds something very personal to it: his daydreams, fears, inspirations, frustrations, wit, and humor. Using mainly acrylics and collage, his illustrations find their way onto a versatile array of surfaces: tattered book covers, wood, canvas, and found objects. His evocative blend of text and illustration stem from a dual interest in both literature and design, aiding in both content and context to the layered backgrounds and landscapes. |

ARTIST STATEMENT: (Excerpt) "Even my process and methods are obsessive, intuitive, but all the while striving for more command over the medium, and a re-discovered commitment to elegant subtlety and sophisticated rawness. I’ve been breaking a lot of my wood by hand, scratching textures and patterns with nails, rocks, bones and my fingernails. I’ve been exploring the possibilities of sanded surfaces by building up color, sanding it back down, and further painting and sanding back and forth to achieve an unfinished, but complete work. I like things that are broken that are somehow “fixed” by paint, manipulation, and context. I am using my hands more in washes and smearing, and finding this a very emotional and personal interplay against the delicate swirls and squiggles. I find humor in mixing science, history, philosophy, crackpot idealogy, religion, myth, and pop culture in my titles and themes, and see these as chances to make the banal extraordinary. It is my hope that these wandering poems make people chuckle at my tongue-in-cheek reflections of myself amidst the vastness of the universe." Joshua Krause |
