The field was not like Yankee Stadium or anything; actually it was next to a dairy farm. The grounds of the dairy guarded us, surrounded by the greenest grass, but when they let the bull into the breeding pen man-oh-man what a commotion, This was in San Pedro we moved on to West Covina, where I got my first taste of cool art. |

I didn’t really no where to fit in. In the projects every one was kind of in this thing together but out here it was like clicks within clicks, very confusing. I started using drugs and kind of being a real public nuisance. Things were not going real well. I didn’t even make two weeks of junior year in High School before I got booted. After begging my way back with promises of being a good boy I quickly got bored and began ditching classes. One time the head Art Dude caught me and instead of turning me in he made me carry bricks for the new kiln. That was it, that quarter I got all of my credits out of the way and spent the rest of the senior year in the Art Labs. |

That was the only good thing about High School except the day I rode my motorcycle across campus right up to the Head Masters office door, just to turn myself in for riding across campus to his door. It was only my second bad boy day so he could only give me detention in homeroom, which happened to be in Art Lab. He was so pissed I think he had to change his pants. |

Anyhow I made it out with every intention of going to college but the summer of 72 was rough and I was in trouble a lot. Fortunately my older brother’s friend hired me, he taught me good building skills and a strong work ethic. Man we worked hard. I got lost in the thought that “this is what men do” and that propelled me to keep going…somehow the Art took a back seat. |

I have had some cool exhibits at some nice places and have sold a lot of work to people who’s names you’d know and some serious collectors - so on the art business side of things all signs point forward. And that is what I want to do with the Art –push it forward. It is my guess –even my hope that what you see in my studio today will only resemble what you see next years at this time. I’m always looking around trying to see what is out there and how to bring it into my paintings- maybe RAW it up a bit. See what sticks ya know. I have a lot of influences or favorite artists and I steal from them regularly. I am currently into a bit of stencil work and using good expressive tools. This part of the conversation is the most difficult for me it’s like trying to describe train of thought. I’m really looking to 06 to be a big year. I have a gig in Chicago to kick it off and an opening in San Diego to keep me busy. I hope you like the work! Ronald (RAW) Wickersham |
